Summer Afternoon Tea Sandwiches with an added desi-twist. They pair perfectly with masala chai.
Summer Afternoon Tea Sandwiches (egg salad chutney, watercress cucumber, jam cheese)

My obsession with afternoon tea continues. I shared these Indian-inspired Tea Party Sandwiches right before Mother’s Day, and now here’s one just in time for Father’s Day. I’m not sure how many men are really into afternoon tea, but I do know no man will ever say no to good food. Amirite?

Where there is a high tea afternoon tea, there is a low tea afternoon tea. This afternoon tea setup requires minimal work. Simply make the 3 summer tea sandwiches, and add a few popular desi snacks. Don’t forget the masala chai, and that’s it really.

3 Summer Afternoon Tea Sandwiches with a desi twist

  • Egg Salad Sandwich with butter & red garlic chutney is prepared with butter, red garlic chutney, and egg salad.
  • Cucumber Cheese Watercress Sandwich is made with Boursin garlic & herb cheese, cucumber, watercress, and chat masala.

  • Apricot Jam Cheese & Jalapeno Sandwich is a sweet and savory combo that is made with butter, apricot jam, unexpected cheddar cheese, and jalapeno slices.

Can I make these recipes vegan, gluten-free?

YES!

For vegan: use vegan butter and garlic & herb cheese. Alternatively, you may use a vegan veggie cream cheese if you can’t find vegan garlic & herb cheese.

For gluten-free: use gf white bread or any soft bread that goes well for afternoon tea.

Tips on making Low Tea Afternoon Tea Sandwiches:

  • Make sure you use thin white bread for these sandwiches, I love Pepperidge Farm and Wonder Bread.
  • The butter and cream cheese should be used at room temperature.
  • Finely chop the veggies used in these sandwiches and thinly slice the cucumber.
  • Prepare the sandwich and then cut the crust off.
  • These sandwiches can be made a day ahead, just make sure you tightly wrap them in plastic wrap to prevent them from drying out.
  • Once you’re ready to serve, add a few of your favorite dry store-bought snacks and make the masala chai. That’s it.
  • For my dry store-bought snacks, I added – Parle-G cookies, chakri, and fried peanuts.

Egg Salad Sandwiches with butter & red garlic chutney

1. Boil 3 eggs and mash them.
2. Add sour cream, cilantro, salt, black pepper, and red chili powder. Mix well.
3. Take 2 slices of white bread and spread both sides with a generous amount of butter and some red garlic chutney (based on your spice tolerance).
4. Spread the egg mixture on one side of the bread. Close sandwich.
5. Slice the crust off and cut it into threes.

Cucumber Cheese Watercress Sandwiches

1. Spread roughly 1 ounce of garlic & herb cheese spread on both slices of white bread. You can easily find Boursin brand at Whole Foods or your local grocery store. Alternatively, you may use veggie cream cheese.
2. Slice cucumbers and set aside watercress.
3. Top one slice of bread with 5 slices of cucumber and the other slice with a small handful of watercress. Sprinkle chat masala to taste over both slices. Close sandwich.
4. Slice the crust off and cut it into threes.

Apricot Jam, Cheese & Jalapeño Sandwiches

1. Spread a generous amount of butter over 2 slices of white bread.
2. Spread a little apricot jam on one side. Alternatively, you may use orange marmalade or any jam that’s slightly tart. Top with chopped jalapeno, however, sliced would work better.
3. Top with sliced Trader Joe’s Unexpected Cheddar Cheese followed by black pepper. If you can’t find Unexpected Cheddar Cheese, use sharp cheddar or New York Cheddar. Close sandwich.
4. Slice the crust off and cut it into threes.

Enjoy!
