Indian Street Food
Indian Street Food is delicious. Some of my favorite classic street food items are Papdi Chaat, Aloo Tikki Chaat, and Bhel Puri. And, of course, the famous Bombay Sandwich.
Unfortunately, when I visit India, I don’t have the luxury of eating Indian Street Food at a roadside dhaba, or else I’ll end up with an upset stomach. Of course, there are exceptions, one being that I can consume hot food when eating street food.
Otherwise, there’s always Haldiram’s for street food, which caters to NRIs. Ahhh.. the joys of visiting motherland. 🙂
Bread Omelette
So what’s Bread Omelette, anyway?
You’d be hooked if you’ve ever watched the roadside vendors make Bread Omelette. I had this dish years ago at a roadside vendor in Delhi, which was out of this world.
The bread is cooked directly with the eggs, allowing everything to bind together. Fresh vegetables like onions, tomatoes, cilantro, and green chilies are mixed in with Indian spices and cheese for added flavor.
I hope you guys try this delicious bread omelet recipe and pair it with a hot cup of masala chai. So good!
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
- Quick and Easy – Minimal prep and cooking time.
- Balanced Meal – Bread Omelette consists of protein, carbohydrates, and fats. Use whole-wheat bread, which helps keep you full longer due to the protein and fiber.
- Versatile – Change up the flavors using your favorite veggies, such as bell peppers, scallions, and cabbage would all be great variations to this dish.
Ingredients & Substitutions

- Eggs – You need one egg and one egg white, however feel free to use two eggs.
- Green Chilies – I love Indian/Thai green chilies in this recipe, however you may use serrano peppers or even jalapeno pepper for less spice.
- Red Chili Powder – You can use Indian red chili powder or cayenne pepper. For less spice, use paprika.
- Bread – I recommend using whole-wheat bread, however you may use white bread.
- Cheese – I love Colby Jack Cheese since it isn’t overpowering in taste and melts well. Feel free to use cheddar, muenster, havarti, Mexican cheese blend, or Amul cheese.
- Veggies – Feel free to change up the classic veggies (onions, tomatoes, cilantro, green chilies) and substitute with bell peppers, scallions, jalapenos, cabbage, or whatever you like.

Nisha’s Tips
✓ Pan & Highheat Oil – Heat up a tawa or castiron pan on low-medium heat. You may also use a nonstick pan. Once hot, add a high-heat oil such as avocado oil. You may also use canola or vegetable oil.
✓ Eggs – Pour the eggs into the pan and swirl around so the eggs spread.
✓ Bread – Before the eggs settle, quickly place both slices of bread on top of the eggs to coat them, then flip the slices over.
How to Serve
→ Serve Indian Bread Omelette with Ching’s red chili sauce, Maggi’s sweet & sour, tomato ketchup, or green chutney. Any of these sauces taste good with this sandwich.
→ Enjoy with a hot cup of kadak masala chai.
Recipe FAQs
Yes. The recipe calls for 1 egg and 1 egg white, however feel free to use 2 or even 3 whole eggs.
I love whole-wheat bread, however white, sourdough, or brioche slices of bread work great too. Keep in mind, that the bread slices should not be too large this way the egg can coat the bread.
You can add more red chili powder or green chilies.
After you add the cheese, go ahead and spread 1-2 teaspoons of green chutney.
