“This is my new favorite snack. It is simple yet full of flavor and an easy snack with a cup of tea or just for lunch. Even my hubby enjoys it.”

I spent the early part of my childhood in Nigeria. One dish that takes me down memory lane with my sister is this Chilli Cheese Toast or as we would like to call it, “bread tamatar cheese onion” which translates to “bread tomatoes cheese onion”.

Chili Cheese Toast

I fondly remember my sister and I making this chili cheese toast. We would take turns beating the ingredients together until a creamy, cheesy filling would form. The sound of steel dishes clinking together still gives me a feeling of nostalgia.

Once done, spread the cheesy mixture on a slice of bread and bake it in the toaster oven until the cheese is gooey, melted, and slightly golden brown.

On days you don’t feel like cooking, make this Veg Chili Cheese Toast which makes a quick breakfast or an easy Indian snack. It’s perfect for tea time or as an evening snack. Enjoy this popular snack with ketchup or Ching’s Red Chili Sauce, and a cup of my Kadak Masala Chai. ๐Ÿ™‚

Cheese Toast Melted

Ingredients

  • Bread: For this recipe, I used white sourdough bread from Whole Foods bakery, however you really can use any bread you wish. For a healthier option, I’ve also tested this recipe with Ezekiel Bread which is sprouted whole wheat and the results were amazing! The recipe also works well with multigrain bread, whole wheat bread, brioche bread, and a french loaf.
  • Red Onion: Finely chop the red onions.
  • Tomatoes: Try and finely chop your tomatoes.
  • Green Chilies: Finely chop Indian/Thai green chilies, use more chilies if you wish.
  • Green Bell Pepper: For some crunch, bell peppers are delicious in this recipe. Again, finely chop the green bell peppers. Alternatively, you may also use red/orange/yellow bell pepper.
  • Whole Milk: For a creamy mixture, you will need to use whole milk. Reduced-fat milk works well too!
  • Cheese: I love using a Mexican Cheese Blend for this recipe, however Medium Cheddar, Pepper Jack Cheese, or Colby Cheese would all work well. Additionally, the Indian Amul Cheese would be great too.
  • Spices: Salt & Black Pepper. Make sure you season the veggies well.
