This Valentine's Day, I'll be in Southern California with my husband. Yes, we still live 3000 miles away from each other.

Although I'm not too big on Valentine's Day, I still like to do a little something on the holiday.

Baking with chocolate is a must on Valentine's Day, there is something about chocolate and love that goes so well together.

Enter, these Red Velvet Chocolate Chip Walnut Cookies.

The walnuts are optional, but they add a nice crunch and balance out the sweetness in these cookies.

You can also make these cookies with white chocolate chips which are AMAZING, find the recipe here.

Personally, I prefer the white chocolate chip cookies more than the dark chocolate chips, but that's just me.

Hope you guys give these cookies a shot if you're in search for a delicious V-Day recipe.

    • Dark Chocolate Chips - 1 cup
    • Walnuts - 2 tbsp, chopped

    Instructions

    • Chop walnuts.

    • In a medium size bowl combine all the dry ingredients... flour, cacao powder, baking soda and salt. Stir. Set aside.

    • In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat the butter until creamy and fluffy for about 1 minute.

    • Add the brown and white sugars and cream until well combined for about 1 minute.

    • Add the egg, milk and vanilla. Beat until all the ingredients are well incorporated.

    • Now add the red food color.

    • Here is your dough which will be very sticky.

    • Cover with plastic wrap and into the refrigerator for at least 1 hour. I refrigerated my dough for 1½ hours.

    • This is how your dough should look after an hour or more.

    • Preheat the oven at 350 degrees.

    • Grease two baking trays and line with parchment paperTake about 1½ tablespoons of dough.

    • Roll into a ball and place on baking tray.

    • Into the oven for 10-11 minutes.

    • Out of the oven.. serve immediately!

    Notes

    * Place both baking trays towards the middle of the oven. I noticed a few cookies were slightly burnt at the bottom when placed on the bottom oven tray.
** Walnuts - you can omit the walnuts. If you enjoy walnuts, you can use up to 4 tablespoon (or ¼ cup) of walnuts in this recipe.
