Peanut Butter & Banana Smoothie… made with Low Fat Milk and Agave!

Peanut Butter and banana go hand in hand.  I don’t know of a single person who doesn’t love this combination.  I often have a PB&B sandwich for breakfast, so delicious and healthy.  At my gym there are quite a few delicious smoothie options with peanut butter and banana; however each smoothie goes for $6 which is such a rip off.  Although I get sucked into buying those yummy protein powder smoothies, it’s not really practical.  I could so easily make the smoothies at home at virtually no cost.

For breakfast today, I decided to have a banana smoothie since I didn’t know what to do with all my leftover bananas.  I made a PB&B smoothie with low fat milk and a touch of Agave.  This smoothie would work really well with skim milk too.
Just a tip on Peanut Butter – I used Wegmans Natural Peanut Butter containing only 1 ingredient, peanuts.  There is no high fructose corn syrup and/or partially hydrogenated oils that show up in many famous peanut butter brands.  So the next time you are grocery shopping, check the label before you buy your PB.  If you shop at a Wegmans, Whole Foods, or Trader Joes, I guarantee you will be able to find a healthy, natural, peanut butter that contains no artificial sweeteners, the fewer the ingredients, the better.

Give this recipe a try and shed those pounds!

NUTRITION: Bananas are a very good source of Vitamin B6. They are also a good source of Vitamin C and Fiber.
Peanut Butter is high in fat and should be eaten in moderation. PB is a good source of Fiber, Protein, Folic Acid, and Vitamin E.
Milk is a very good source of Calcium and Vitamin D.  It is also a good source of Protein, Vitamins A and K.

INGREDIENTS:

  • Milk 1% – 1/2 cup
  • Ice Cubes – 2
  • Banana – 1 medium (cut)
  • Peanut Butter – 1 spoonful
  • Agave – 2 tsp (If you don’t have Agave, you can use Honey/Sugar)

DIRECTIONS:
1. Pour milk in a blender or Magic Bullet.

2. Add ice cubes.

3. Add banana.

4. Add a spoonful of peanut butter.

5. Blend.

6. Add Agave if you prefer your smoothie sweeter.  You can use Honey/Sugar instead.

7. Pour and serve.  I like mine in a wine glass. 🙂 I was full for 3 hours after having this smoothie for breakfast.

Just a tip, if you like your smoothies thick like a milkshake, you should peel the banana, cut it up into pieces and freeze it. I actually buy 2 bundles of bananas at the store, one to keep in my fruit basket, and the other bundle i peel and slice them all and portion them into ziploc baggies and freeze em all. If you havent tried this already, i think you would love it 🙂

@Jen – Thanks! I've been meaning to, many people mentioned that to me. Well with spring and summer approaching, I'll certainly be making creamy, thick, milkshake type smoothies. 🙂 Thanks!

I tried this but I mixed it up a little. Instead of using sugar and ice cubes, I replaced it with protein powder and a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream.

It turned out thick and delicious!

Also, I love the pictures you posted! Well done! 🙂

Adding some banana or vanilla flowered pudding mix (just the powder) adds some extra flavor. Go for the sugar free pudding for a healthier choice!

I just made this and it was/is (cause I'm still drinking it) AWESOME. I used coconut milk because that's what I have in my house and I probably didn't even need the agave, its so sweet and yummy. Like a dessert!

@Anonymous – oh I bet coconut milk tasted uh-mazing! yeah, agave may be too sweet, especially if the banana is ripe. so happy you enjoyed this. next time consider freezing up the banana – just cup them into slices and in the freezer for about 2 hours or more. then make the smoothie.. heaven!

@Henni – what a great idea with the almonds, that's like double the nuts with the peanut butter, too. Awesome!

@Alyssa – that's great to hear. This is a great breakfast that is filling too. Adding walnuts would really keep you full for a good 3 hours.

You're welcome. You really don't need the sugar given the banana sweetness.
