Upscale, fine dining at Mastro’s Ocean Club Newport Beach, CA. You must try the sinful Butter Cake.

I flew all the way to California to celebrate Valentine’s Day with my husband, it was our first Valentine’s as husband and wife.

He surprised me with a dinner to Mastro’s Ocean Club Newport Beach which holds a special place in my heart. It was during our courtship, my husband brought me here for a little night cap. The sunset views over the Pacific Ocean are breathtaking.

The one item that has me coming to Mastro’s is the outrageously delicious Butter Cake. This cake consists of an interior cheesecake filling and is then topped off with decadent vanilla ice-cream and strawberry sauce.Butter Cake - Mastro's Ocean Club - Newport Beach, CA (89)

Mastro’s is worth dining at for a special occasion, otherwise grab a seat at the bar and enjoy that divine Butter Cake.Mastro's Ocean Club - Newport Beach, CA (46)

Complimentary
Bread + Butter: So delicious… different flavors of bread, my favorite is the parmesan crusted bread.Bread - Mastro's Ocean Club | Newport Beach, CA

Wine
Rose Wine: One from Central Coast, CA, and the other is a Chateau Minuty Cotes de Provence. Both excellent wines, the one from CA is slightly sweeter. Both favorites!Rose Wine - Mastro's Ocean Club | Newport Beach, CA

Appetizer
Ocean Club Crab Cake: We ordered a small portion which consists of only one crab cake. Thick juicy crab cake that comes with a side of watercress salad, avocado and tarter sauce. The crab cake is perfection and not salty at all. A favorite.

Entrees (note: sides come separate)
Pan-Seared Chilean Sea Bass: One of my favorite fish to order. Although the fish was perfectly cooked, tender, and flaky, it lacked flavor. Next time I order the Chilean Sea Bass at Mastro’s, I’ll make sure to request it blackened or cooked with breadcrumbs.

Blackened Halibut: The Halibut was surprisingly better than the sea bass, and this was probably because it was blackened rather than pan-seared. The tartar sauce on the side brought out the flavors of the fish. Well made and a must-do. A favorite.

Sides
Lobster Mashed Potatoes: A signature dish at Mastro’s! The mashed potatoes are creamy, buttery and garlicky with big chunks of lobster. It really doesn’t get any better than this. Perfection! A favorite.

Roasted Brussels Sprouts: I found most of the pieces to be quite dry and slightly burnt. Disappointing.

Dessert
Mastro’s Signature Warm Butter Cake: Perfection! Can you tell? A divine cake with a cheesecake interior filling topped with creamy vanilla ice-cream and strawberry sauce, additionally, this incredible cake is served with a side of whipped cream made in-house. You can’t leave Mastro’s without indulging in their famous Butter Cake. A favorite.

Mastro’s Ocean Club Newport Beach is one of my favorite restaurants in Orange County, but it’s one I save for those special occasions. Having said that, sometimes if I’m craving that divine Butter Cake, I’ll head to their bar area and just order cake and coffee, it’s the best! This place is quite pricy, and thus when you order seafood or steak, there are no sides, keep in mind you need to order the sides separately. Lastly, the quality of seafood here is impeccable. Very highly recommended.
