Brunch @ Sabor Latin Bistro | Edgewater, NJ (now Lolita's Mexican Cantina)

This past weekend my friends (Anu, Jhiane, Marian) and I headed to Edgewater for brunch at Sabor.sabor

Situated across the Hudson River in New Jersey, Edgewater offers breathtaking views of the Upper West Side.

And Sabor offers excellent Latin cuisine in an intimate and romantic candlelit setting.

The menu here is seasonal, and thus you won’t always find your favorite item(s) each time you visit, but you also won’t be disappointed.

Additionally, on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays Sabor celebrates a sprit of Latin culture with two dance floors.

Since we brunched at Sabor just after Halloween, this adorable little gem was adorned with Halloween dΓ©cor.

Being a lover of Latin food, Sabor is by far one of my favorite places to brunch.  The food here is highly comparable to what you would find in Manhattan.

    LOCATION
    8809 River Road
    Edgewater, NJ 07020
    (north jersey)

    MENU: Sabor Menu
    COST: $$
    CUISINE: Latin, Brunch
RECOMMENDED TO: Couples, Happy Hour, Small Groups, Romantic Dining, Dancing (Thurs/Fri/Sat nights)
    AMBIENCE: Romantic/Cozy/Intimate

    MY REVIEW
We were presented with a complimentary appetizer… bread + white bean cilantro dip.  Personally, I enjoyed the dip which had mild accents of cilantro.

Jhiane and I split the Chicken Empanada Trio… shredded chicken with Spanish olives, capers served with roasted tomatillo avocado salsa.  The empanada was good, a little on the dry side though, the filling could have been more juicier & more moist.

Since Jhiane and I are like the same person (haha), we each ordered the same entree - Sopes de Camaron Enchilado… sautΓ©ed shrimp, red peppers, onions in a spicy tomato sauce served with white rice and tostones.  This dish was highly flavorsome, just perfection.

Marian went for the Sabor Benedict… poached eggs, crispy yuca served over sweet plantain cake, chorizo and topped off with cilantro hollandaise and pico de gallo.  Her dish was delicious.  The cilantro hollandaise added depths of flavor.

Anu went for the Sabor Benedict as well, however instead of poached eggs she requested scrambled eggs sans the chorizo.  Anu’s dish was delicious too, but personally when it comes to a β€œbenedicts”, I prefer poached over scrambled.  The folks at Sabor were gracious enough to accommodate her.

Two out of four of us ended our meal with coffee.  Of course, I, got a cup of coffee with cream.  I absolutely love the coffee at Sabor whereas Anu opted for a cup of CafΓ© con Leche.  Between our drinks, the CafΓ© con Leche was slightly creamier, hence better.

Dishes I’ve enjoyed in the past
Cangrejo Benedict… crab croquettes with sautΓ©ed spinach, poached eggs topped with piquillo peppers hollandaise.  One of my favorites at Sabor… love the shredded crab croquettes.
Pollo ala Plancha… grilled chicken breast with seasonal vegetables.  A good dish, but not one I would recommend given the number of other, better dishes to choose from.
Pollo Enchilado… shredded chicken with tomatillo avocado salsa served with yellow rice.  This right here is my all time favorite dish at Sabor, but unfortunately it is no longer on the menu.  I can’t imagine why?
Desserts I’ve enjoyed in the past
Tres Leches… traditional three milk cake with coconut.  OMG… this cake is HEAVENLY!  It is drenched in coconut milk and probably evaporated milk, phenomenal!
    CrΓ¨me Brule… delicious custard dessert.

    OVERALL: 4.5 / 5
As mentioned above, Sabor is one of my favorite spots for Brunch.  It is a trek for me to drive to Edgewater given the amount of traffic on a mere single lane road, but the spectacular views make the ride worthwhile, not to mention the amazing food.  Most dishes here are above average to excellent.  Grab a Sangria to wash it all down.  It would be a shame to leave Sabor without indulging in a dessert… I can’t rave enough about the Tres Leches, but for next time I have my eye on the Mango Mousse and Warm Chocolate Bread Pudding.  Most desserts here have a hint of pineapple, mango, coconut, or banana… all fruits that you would commonly find in the Caribbean.  The only downfall of this restaurant is the service is painfully slow and that’s probably because they are actually preparing the food, totally worth the wait if you ask me.

    Ratings Recommendations
Food: Very Good to Excellent Sopes de Camaron Enchilado, Cangrejo Benedict, Sabor Benedict
    Desserts: Excellent Tres Leches w/Coconut
Drinks: Excellent Coffee w/Cream, CafΓ© con Leche
    DΓ©cor: Excellent Intimate/Cozy/Romantic
Service: Good Painfully slow, but friendly & accomodating
Value: Excellent Priced correctly given the location and quality of food.

I'd be pretty happy with one of those benedicts (runny yolk is a must!) and a brulee at brunch! Sounds fabulous!

Oh wow this place looks phenomenal. I love brunch and I love latin food but I don't think I have ever combined the too- need to rectify that asap! I am especially intrigued by the Tres Leches milk cake...anything drenched in coconut milk sounds heavenly to me :).
