Apple Pecan Pie Oatmeal

Fact – I am allergic to raw apples.  I don’t think my mom believed me for the longest time because she would put a plate of sliced apples in front of me… she just thought I hated apples.  apple cinnamon 011
Eventually she realized I was, indeed, allergic to apples, and started boiling them for me which would yield applesauce.  Cooked apples is not an issue for me. apple cinnamon 001
As soon as I eat a raw apple, my heart rate shoots up, my throat gets scratchy, I feel dizzy and nauseous.  I’ve tried regular apples, granny smith apples, organic apples, you name it, nothing works!apple cinnamon 023
Thankfully though, I am not allergic to applesauce or apple pie for that matter, because we all know how much I love Mrs. Smith’s Apple Pie despite all the preservatives.apple cinnamon 007
Today I decided to make Apple Pecan Pie Oatmeal using regular unsweetened applesauce.  It tasted very similar to apple pie without all the necessary fat.  Here goes…apple cinnamon 035

NUTRITION:
Applesauce is a great source of Fiber and Vitamin C.  Oats help reduce cholesterol and are a good source of protein and fiber.  Milk is an excellent source of Protein and Calcium.  Pecans contain natural antioxidants and are heart-healthy nuts known to lower cholesterol.  Chia Seeds is a super food and an excellent source of Fiber, Protein, Omega 3 Fatty Acids, and Antioxidants.

INGREDIENTS:

  • Old-Fashioned Oats – 1/3 cup
  • Milk 1% Low Fat – 1/3 cup
  • Water – 1/2 cup
  • Santa Cruz Organic Applesauce – 1/3 cup
  • Vanilla Extract – 1/2 tsp
  • Cinnamon – 1/2 tsp
  • Nutmeg – just a pinch
  • Chia Seeds – 1 tsp
  • Pure Maple Syrup – 1 to 2 tsp
  • Pecans – 5 to 6 (roughly chopped)

DIRECTIONS:
1. In a small pot, heat the oats, milk, and water on low-medium heat.apple pie oatmeal 171

2. Add the applesauce.apple pie oatmeal 173
3. Add the vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg.  Stir and bring to a boil – a few minutes.apple pie oatmeal 176
4. Once heated thru, add chia seeds and maple syrup to taste.apple pie oatmeal 178apple pie oatmeal 179
5. Pour into a serving bowl.
6. Top with pecans and breakfast is served.  You can also take this one step further and top it off with Greek Yogurt for some extra indulgence.

TELL ME: Are you allergic to apples or any fruits in the apple family?  Are you allergic to anything?

Oh wow I feel so bad for you- apples are my all time favorite fruit! I would have more of an issue staying off raw apples than chocolate! Loving this oatmeal recipe- sounds just as comforting as a slice of apple pie! I went through a phase of eating applesauce every single day, sometimes multiple times a day! We make it at home and it really does taste like Apple Pie filling sans the extra sugar/cals! Another delicious alternative is applesauce stirred in Greek yogurt and topped with granola or raw oats!

I had no idea that people could be allergic to apples? I wonder why raw ones specifically? Anyway, glad that you are able to enjoy applesauce and cooked apples…and yes, Mrs. Smith knows how to do pie right. 🙂

That looks so good, Honey! I'm glad you get to enjoy apples at least in it's cooked/processed state. My husband's allergic to bananas but, can somehow eat banana chips. Extremely strange. So, I now use bananas as weapons against him 😉

Luckily, I have no food allergies that I know of. Some allergies are worse than others, depending how commonly the food is used. Strange that you are not allergic to apples irregardless of how prepared. However, it is good that you do not have to totally eliminate it from your diet.
The oatmeal here sounds delicious, love the flavor choice and I want to dip my spoon into that bowl-yum!

Thank you all! Yes, never thought I'd be allergic to apples either.. I react the same way with plums and pears. I'm convinced this has something to do with the outer layer of certain fruits that don't work for me.

Bummer! Apples are delicious. I'm glad that you can eat them cooked! I am allergic to pineapple and kiwi and have a similar reaction to what you seem to have to apples. This oatmeal looks fabulous! Almost dessert-like.

My husband is allergic to raw carrots. So no carrot juice. He feels the same way like you do . But when I cook the carrots , he's ok.

Heaven in a bowl. I can’t tell you how easy it i Heaven in a bowl. I can’t tell you how easy it is to make TOFU THAI RED CURRY - even if you can’t find kaffir lime leaves. There is no ginger and garlic in this recipe, and there is no need to sauté the veggies. Simply add raw veggies to a simmering coconut gravy and cook the veggies for a few minutes. Flavor the sauce and garnish. Tofu Thai Red Curry is a classic and is the perfect combo of sweet, spicy, and salty flavors.
