After visiting Puerto Rico, Turks and Caicos, and Aruba, St. Thomas USVI, was next on my list. Yes, I keep a mental checklist of the Caribbean islands I want to visit. The irony is that out of all the Caribbean islands I’ve visited, St. Thomas is by far the prettiest, if not the most romantic. There is an abundance of beauty on this breathtaking island surrounded by both mountains and sea.
When in St. Thomas, drive on the left side of the road. Driving here can be dangerous since the roads are narrow and windy. The locals drive pretty rough and there were a couple close calls during my vacation. Since I was tagging along with someone “brave,” I decided to rent a car during my stay, but I certainly didn’t attempt driving, I’m not that brave.
St. Thomas is an ideal destination for families, couples, or anyone looking for a relaxing vacation. There is very limited nightlife on the island which can be found in the Red Hook district. Duffy’s Love Shack and Caribbean Saloon seemed to be the most happening spots.
Just like most of the other Caribbean islands, fish is highly popular at most restaurants, in particular, wahoo – which was seen on just about every menu and often times it was the “catch of the day.” Additionally, snapper and sea bass were also on most menus which made me mighty happy. I soaked up all my omega-3s and antioxidants in one week.
And lastly, regarding the question on everyone’s mind, the water! The water in St. Thomas is crystal clear, often blue, rarely green. After doing a Day Trip to St. John, I can safely say the BEST WATER I have seen in the Caribbean so far are Turks and Caicos and St. John followed by St. Thomas and then Aruba. Enjoy!
My One Week Travel Diary:
Checked into my One Bedroom Villa at the Point Pleasant Resort. It was the first time I stayed at a villa and I enjoyed the experience, it felt less like a hotel and more like home. The villa had an island look and feel that I liked.
I’d wake up in the mornings, make myself a cup of coffee, sit on the balcony, enjoy the breeze and hear the sound of the waves crashing against one another. Sometimes I’d work on my blog too. It was really nice. It brought me so much joy.
First meal in St. Thomas at Sunset Grille. One of the best sunsets here… blue, purple, & pink hues.
I went grocery shopping one day and I was SHOCKED by the price of Nut Butters. Even Skippy Peanut Butter was pricey at $5. The locals mentioned they didn’t shop at these grocery stores, but rather Kmart. Everyone on the island goes to Kmart where the prices are roughly 50% cheaper.
A dinner at Blue Orchid – the BEST MEAL on the entire trip! The views from above were absolutely stunning.
The next day, a day trip to St. John. I had no idea this was going to be one bumpy ferry ride. I was scared the ferry would tip over. I was scared because I can’t swim. So yeah, I was pretty cranky, nauseous and scared.
And then I saw this, and smiled again. I highly recommend doing a Day Trip to St. John, check out my post.
In St. Thomas, the MOST ROMANTIC DINNER at Havana Blue. The drinks were phenomenal, and the food was amazing too!
Afternoon Tea at a gazebo at the BEST TEAHOUSE in St. Thomas – Cup-N-Kettle Tea House.
Other Attractions to Consider:
Magens Bay Beach
Coki Point Beach
Shopping in Charlotte Amalie
More coming on dining in St. Thomas and also a day trip to St. John! Stay tuned!
