For my friend, Marian’s birthday, we headed to Roman Nose – a family-owned restaurant, one that has a nostalgic feel to it. The food here is traditional, simple, and the ingredients are always fresh. I was very pleasantly surprised by how delectable the food was at this wonderful Italian restaurant in Jersey City!
My friends, Jhiane and Marian, and I started off with the Meatball Bowl. Although I don’t usually eat red-meat, I’ll nibble on it every now and then. The meatballs tasted homemade, the sauce was fresh, light, and not too oily.
For my entree, I went with the Sicilian specialty, Casarecce alla Norma which was nothing short of spectacular. The pasta was made from scratch and perfectly al dente. The combination of eggplant, onion, tomatoes, and sweet basil was highly flavorsome.
Marian opted for the Zucca Pizza which is essentially roast butternut squash, pancetta, caramelized onion, mozzarella, fontina, parmigiano, maple glaze, and parsley – a sweet & salty combo pizza. Personally, I am not a fan of sweet flavors on my pizza, but for those of you who are, you would love this, Marian sure did. Just like the dishes mentioned above, the pizza was light and all the ingredients tasted fresh. Btw… this right here is a small.
And for desserts… we ordered the famous Nonna Memma’s Cookies. The cookies were very slightly warm, cakey, and buttery. Due to all the hype about these cookies on social media, I was expecting something extraordinary, however these cookies were just okay for me.
On the other hand, the Panettone Bread Pudding (Budino di Panettone con Creama Inglese all’Arancia e Amaretto) was exceptionally good. I had one of those moments where you end up closing your eyes after the first bite, and you have an OMG moment. The bread pudding was warmed through, creamy, with hints of orange. A dollop of whipped cream on top sealed the deal. Ambrosial.
MENU: Roman Nose
CUISINE: Authentic Italian
FAVORITES: Casarecce alla Norma | Meatball Bowl | Panettone Bread Pudding
VERDICT: 4 / 5 – A GEM IN JERSEY CITY THAT WILL HAVE YOU REMINISCING ABOUT ITALY!
SERVICE: Painfully Slow | Not very Attentive | Just OK
Roman Nose is one of those Italian restaurants that takes you back to Italy in terms of flavor. The food here is light, fresh, and flavorful… just as you would find in Italy. We all left happy, and among the 3 main dishes ordered, I personally thought the Casarecce alla Norma was perfection. It certainly helps that the pasta here is made from scratch, and for a slightly extra charge you can opt for whole wheat or gluten free pasta. Additionally, there are plenty of options here for the vegetarians. My only complaint is the painfully slow service, but the food makes the wait worthwhile. I can’t wait to dine here again, especially for brunch.
