Friday’s Favorite Things - 6.14.13

Happy Birthday to me…
... not sure what I'll do today, but I'll make sure I have my cake and eat it too!

1. Gratitude
This past week on Facebook, a friend I went to high school with posted about his ongoing cancer progress in addition to this very heartfelt and powerful message that I wanted to share with all of you…

"I've said it before and I'll say it again, I urge you all savor both the minor and major things in life. It's easy to get overjoyed at a wedding, promotion, new car, or home purchase, but rarely doesn't anyone get a rush of life after eating a slice of pizza or walking around the park or simply driving to work. I crave all those things and with any luck can get back to a somewhat normal lifestyle.  Be thankful you are alive and healthy, nothing else matters. And for those of you that aren't healthy and are fighting along side with me, I feel for you. There are many battles on the road to victory."

Puts things into perspective, huh?  All those petty problems seem so small now.  While I’ll admit that I do enjoy the big things in life, I most definitely make sure I stop and enjoy the little moments in life Every.Single.Day.  A hot cup of tea, a moist cupcake, a stroll on a beautiful day, breathing fresh air, watching a gorgeous sunset to name a few.  Above all I realize that if you have your health, you pretty much have it all!  Sometimes we need that reminder to be grateful, and what better day to remind myself how lucky I am to be both alive and healthy than on my birthday!  I hope you all got something from his message above, and I pray he fights till the end and makes it!  Cancer has claimed way too many lives, so here is to realizing that life is short, let’s count our blessings and be grateful by enjoying the little things and live in the moment.  ~ priceless  Image (6)

2. Lapis of Luxury by Essie
A couple people emailed me asking about the nail polish color I wore in my recent Miami Beach posts – twas’ Lapis of Luxury by Essie!  Periwinkle is the color of the season, so when I spotted all my favorite fashion bloggers wearing Essie's Lapis of Luxury, I had to get in on it and did my nails before heading to Miami Beach.  This gorgeous and happy color screams beach to me, it's the little things.  ~ $8 @ Essie

3. Red Velvet Cupcake & Chocolate Cupcake w/Peanut Butter Frosting @ Sweet
My friend, Marian, spent the weekend with me while my husband was out of town, and we had the best time together.  Let’s see, we watched Ina & Jeffrey (click on this link) all over each other on Food Network while we laughed hysterically, we enjoyed a Latin Brunch at Sabor, we took a long walk by the Hudson River waterfront, and we indulged in cupcakes at Sweet.  Sweet in Hoboken is my favorite Jersey bakery that stands up to the cupcakes found in the NYC bakeries.  All the cupcakes at Sweet are moist, delicious, fresh, and not too dense.  The best part is they sell regular sized cupcakes and mini muffin sized cupcakes, and thus making it easier to try multiple flavors.  Well since it is my birthday week, I picked up two mini cupcakes for myself, while Marian enjoyed 1 regular sized Chocolate Ganache Cupcake.  A cupcake instantly brightens my day, it’s the little things, really.  ~ $1.60 each mini sized cupcake @ Sweet, Hoboken, NJ

  1. Wishing you a very happy birthday, Nisha...hope it is a really special one for you & of course cupcake-filled :)! I love your approach to life and it really is about the little things. Some of the little things I enjoy regularly include:

The first sip of coffee in the morning
    A hot shower
Being indoors as it starts to downpour

    Have a great birthday weekend!

    1. Thanks so much K... so far it is cupcake filled. It is about the little things.. and I love your list.. especially a hot shower on a super cold day, and having hot chocolate while it's pouring outside. Given that Mumbai has its monsoons... masala chai and samosas sound amazing. YUM! Have a great weekend too! :-)

  2. Happy Birthday Nisha! You have a great day. Hope you are being spoilt rotten! For me its all about the little things! After a hard day at work-coming home to a happy, eagerly waiting for you child with a smile on his face, melts all my problems in the world! Can't get enough of the hugs and kisses from him. God help me when he grows up and finds all this revolting! :)

    1. Thanks Sejal. I hope I'm spoilt rotten too. Awww... I have yet to experience that, but coming home to my nieces when they were little babies was the happiest moment of my day... hugs and kisses from a child can cure any sadness. I bet it will be hard to let go, but it's the price everyone has to pay, unfortunately. :(

  12. First a Very Happy Birthday!

As your friend rightly said...savour every moment.

It is very unfortunate what your friend is going through. I can imagine his pain since I saw my Mum going through it all before she succumbed after fighting bravely with the cancer. Will keep him in my prayers.

    1. Thank you! I'm sorry about your mom, I lost my grandmother and brother-in-law to cancer and I understand the pain the victim goes thru. It really sucks, and I hope we'll have a cure someday! Thanks!
