I never knew Cafe Lalo was featured in the romantic comedy film “You’ve Got Mail” with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, that is until my friend mentioned it to me.
Last week, I trekked all the way to the Upper West Side after work to meet my friend at this adorable pseudo-Parisian cafe.
The cafe had a very European look and feel to it which I loved.
Plethora of desserts.

My friend started with a Strawberry Lemonade that she said was really good. Fresh strawberries was a nice touch.
She also ordered a Grilled Sandwich with Cheddar Cheese and Mushrooms on Ciabatta bread. YUM! Clearly this sandwich was delicious since both cheddar cheese and mushrooms have bold flavors and go so well together. Excellent.
Since I’m so darn picky about my cheese and I hate all the pungent cheeses, I made a dumb move based on our waiter’s recommendation and ordered the Cauliflower and Mozzarella Grilled Cheese Sandwich on Whole Wheat bread. Mozzarella doesn’t have much flavor going on and neither does the cauliflower making this sandwich extremely bland. Kinda my own fault, I should have known better!
Both our sandwiches came with a side of Mediterranean Salad and Roasted Potatoes – both were really good, especially the potatoes, which kinda made up for the tasteless sandwich.
We both ordered dessert. My friend went for the Strawberry Shortcake which was good and tasted like something out of a grocery store.
I went for the Tres Leches… parts of it which tasted good and other parts had that freezer taste, hence this was just okay for me. I’m pretty sure their desserts aren’t freshly made.
Of course, I ordered a cup of coffee as well which was good, but could have been hotter.
VERDICT: 3.5 / 5
Based on looks alone, Cafe Lalo is really cute and the perfect casual date spot or just a great hangout with girlfriends. I look forward to giving this adorable café another chance for brunch.
Now let’s talk food. Cafe Lalo is probably most famous for their steamed eggs, and since it was dinner time, neither one of us were in the mood for eggs. Next time I venture off to the Upper West Side, I will consider ordering their steamed eggs. Having said that, my Mozzarella and Cauliflower Grilled Cheese sandwich was a huge let down for me, probably the blandest sandwich I’ve had to date. Not to mention the desserts were nothing like what you would expect from a cafe this famous.
Although I wish I could rave about Café Lalo, I have had much better experiences in similar settings, such as, Alice’s Tea Cup.
Decor: Excellent (European & adorable)
Service: Good (friendly, but a bit slow in getting the food)
