Hoboken is like a mini-Manhattan, only cleaner, with a strip of great restaurants, bakeries, and booming real estate. My husband and I strolled all the way from downtown to midtown Hoboken to check out the rentals in the area, however to our dismay a decent place in Hoboken is seriously overpriced. I’m really content with where I live, however it seems my husband wants to experience a different city – he likes CHANGE! 🙂
So I stumbled upon the Old German Bakery, a bakery I hadn’t ever encountered in the past and turns out it was only 2 months old. As soon I saw this bakery, I was instantly drawn towards it; perhaps it was the yellow and white stripes that captivated me. I just had to check this bakery out since we were both pretty starved after all that walking.

I walked in and noticed rolls, lots of freshly baked goods. They all looked so fresh and yummy.
And then a plethora of pastries.
I loved the simplicity of this bakery. It had such a European feel to it. We really need more of these Euro type bakeries here in the United States. In addition, I loved this painting.
It was slightly modern with espresso wooden tables for 2 scattered all around.
Bakery, Pastries, Cafe.

RECOMMENDED HEALTHY EATS… since there is no online menu available for the Old German Bakery, I am unable to provide some healthy recommendations. Having said that, if you are watching your weight, opt for a coffee with milk, or a cappuccino made with Skim (non-fat) Milk, avoid pastries, and choose a simple whole wheat bread roll instead. There is no online nutritional information available for Old German Bakery, please use your own discretion when making a decision.
I ordered a small German Coffee which is stronger and creamier than American Coffee. I wasn’t too thrilled about the coffee being stronger, but I was excited that it was creamier.
Of course, I added more cream so it wasn’t quite as strong. There is just something so special about being served coffee in a cute little cup, it isn’t often I get to experience this nowadays since most of us are on the GO.
My husband went for a small Cappuccino which was mild, frothy, and delicious.
It was so good that he ended up ordering a large Cappuccino which we both later shared.
We each ordered a sandwich that we also shared. I went for the Veggie Sandwich on a Roll consisting of lettuce, tomatoes, American cheese, mustard, and a little mayo. The roll was crunchy, and not hard.
My husband went for the same Veggie Sandwich… but on a Croissant. Of course, his sandwich was a lot more delicious than mine because it was on a soft and buttery croissant. 🙂
Naturally since I was at a bakery, I had to get something sweet and gave in to my cravings. I went for the Almond Cream Pastry which sorta reminded me of the Napoleon, but it wasn’t really.
This pastry had a good amount of cream filled between 2 thin layers of cake topped off with sliced almonds. YUM is right!
VERDICT – 5 / 5
The Old German Bakery is a new gem in Hoboken with an awesome location. I loved everything about this bakery starting from the ambience, the Euro atmosphere, the cleanliness, the delicious coffee, the sandwiches, the pastries, and the friendly service. I loved being served coffee in a cute little cup which seems so inviting.
The staff is more than willing to explain what each pastry is filled with considering how frequently people were coming in and out of this place.
So if you live in and around Hoboken, I highly recommend you check out this adorable bakery located on Washington Street which is sure to give Carlo’s Bake Shop some much needed competition. Dare I say it, or even think it, but I personally think Carlo’s Bake Shop is so average and overrated!
TELL ME: Have you tried the Old German Bakery, if so, whaddya think?
